• Blå Bog. Denmark native and longtime Montana resident Elly Marie (Rasmussen) Jonasen, 98, of Great Falls and formerly of Dagmar and St. Ignatius, who enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, gardening and sports, died of natural causes Thursday at a local hospital.
A celebration of her life will take place at a later date in St. Ignatius. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Survivors include her daughters Correne (Robert) Whipps of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Joan (John) Wagner of Missoula; her sons, Richard (Carol) Jonasen of Dillon and Ken Jonasen of Ulm; special friend Ann Wankel of Great Falls; a sister-in-law, Florence Rasmussen of Missoula; and many nieces, nephews, grand-children and great-grandchildren.
Elly Marie Jonasen passed away peacefully on Nov. 30, 2006, six days short of her 99th birthday. Elly was born Dec. 6, 1907, in Vestervig, Denmark. She came to America with her parents in 1910 when they arrived at Ellis Island. She lived in Dagmar for 41 years, then St. Ignatius for 52 years, and most recently, Great Falls for three years.
After high school graduation, Elly taught in a one-room school-house near Grenora, N.D. She married Art Jonasen, also an immigrant from Denmark, on Aug. 31, 1936. They were blessed with four children. Elly was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, homemaker, neighbor and friend.
Elly was an avid sports fan. She always enjoyed local sports and her beloved Grizzlies. Some of her favorite pastimes were traveling, reading, sewing, cooking, gardening and family get-togethers.
Elly was preceded in death by her husband, Art Jonasen in 1965; her sisters, Anne Holly, Edie Klein and Marie Clemens; and her brothers, Soren and Chris Rasmussen.
Her life will be celebrated at a later date at St. Ignatius, where Elly can be near Art and the Mission Mountains.
We will always remember her presence in our lives.
